Untrained pets are difficult to bind to a place, especially, dogs. A dog loves to roam in the streets and visit new places. It is a fact that, by nature, dogs always try to escape out of a limited space unless trained well. Although a morning walk is healthy for pets sometimes, it becomes problematic for the owners to keep their dogs within the yard. Some breeds without proper training roam outside the house like stray dogs and create problems for people nearby and the owner. Training a pet dog is a necessary event before you take it to your home. Otherwise, you may find to keep a pet troublesome.
What Is A Shock Collar?
The main question is what is a shock collar? And why it required for pet training? A shock collar is mainly a device tied to a dog’s neck for controlling its irregular or incorrect behavior. It is mainly recommended for aggressive dogs that don’t follow rules and always try to escape. Whenever a dog barks aggressively, tries to harm anybody or tries to cross the boundaries, an electric shock of a few amperes is given to him. It is safe and comes with a range of variable electric intensities. It is usually radio-controlled. The purpose of the shock collar is to make the dog uncomfortable with its particular incorrect behavior.
Setup A Boundary
First of all, set a boundary for your dog in the yard. Use red flags or red tapes and mark a boundary within which the dog has to stay. Flags should be considered as an indicator for the red zone which means the boundary is crossed. Teach your dog about these boundaries and the harms of crossing them using a shock collar. It is the first basic lesson for training a dog with a shock collar.
Don’t rush while following this step of training. Teaching commands to an untrained dig might be tricky and time-taking. Once your pet dog is at home you should start teaching him the commands. Start with the basic lessons like stop, start, eat, run, catch, wait, etc. Tug his leash when he tries to create a mess in the house. Use a bell to indicate the mealtime. Set some rewards for short accomplished tasks.
Walk Around the Border Of The Yard
Take your dog to a walk within the boundary. If he tries to cross or jump the boundary, stop right there or tug the leash. Otherwise, let a shock collar or remote training collar work. The uncomfortable response will make the dog avoid that particular behavior for avoiding irritating electric shock. Make the morning walk practice within boundaries compulsory and repeat the walking session at least twice or thrice a day.
Never Compromise On Rules
To make the dog obedient and habitual of the rules, you should never compromise on them. For instance, if the dog tries to cross the boundary, start the course again. Also, try to teach the limits from another side of the boundary. This will let him know that even when you are crossing the red flags, he is supposed to be within the boundary of the yard.
Understand The Behavior
It is very necessary to understand the behavior of dogs. Sometimes, the dog is not aggressive or disobedient, he is just scared. In this case, if you use the shock collar it will cause the dog to behave even worse. The dog will become extremely insecure around you and will try even harder to escape. When a dog aimlessly digs a hole in the sand, he is just bored. Dogs want the attention of their owner. Don’t leave them alone for a long time. Never beat or harm your dog from breaking the rules, this will make him insecure and violent.
Make The Yard Interesting And Cozy
This is an interesting way to teach boundaries to your dog. Make your yard beautiful along with the porch. Set a comfortable area with proper shelter in the corner of the yard. Place a pot with fresh cool water. A simple yard with overgrown rough grass seems like a prison to the dog that came from a proper pet house.
Don’t Provide A Climbing Aid
Climbing is the first thing that a dog learns immediately. He finds climbing interesting and creative. Try to avoid placing chairs, baskets, dustbins, or anything that can provide the dog a climbing aid. Once he learned climbing or jumping from chair to chair, it will only create a mess in your house.
Use A Fence
Try using a fence around the boundary of the yard, especially, near the wall. This act will discourage the dog to jump and cross the boundary. Add flowers and shrubs at some distance before the fence to add beauty to the yard.
Place A Dog House In The Yard
Dog house makes yard much interesting for the dog to stay. A small colorful dog house with separate pots for water and food is a cozy place for a dog where he can sleep or take some rest. Place a bell on the front top of house and teach the dog to ring that bell when he is hungry.
Teach With Games And Challenges
Dogs usually enjoy games a lot. The best way to train a dog is through games. Give your dog some daily challenges and increase the level of a challenge after every short interval. Be strict towards obligation of rules but, gently. Try to increase the obstacles during a morning walk. Use a rainbow color ball for playing.
Harms Of Using A Shock Collar
At one hand, shock collars train and correct pet dogs, but on the other hand, it makes scared and insecure dogs behave even worse. It can provoke aggressiveness in a scared dog and he might try to harm the owner or escape the yard. Sometimes, it confuses the dog and he repeatedly behaves in the prohibited manner. So shock collars are not always helpful in training a dog.
